    High-risk vulnerability for Android Smartphones August 2024

    Recently a high-risk warning has been issued by CERT-In ( Indian Computer Emergency Response Team) for android smartphones, especially those Android phones having ‘Qualcomm and MediaTek’ processor. The severity of this High-risk vulnerability for Android smartphones having Qualcomm and MediaTek chipset is determined by its potential impact on these devices as attackers are trying to exploit the Android devices with the help of this multiple vulnerabilities, reported in Android.

    The information about this high-risk vulnerability for Android Smartphones has been provided by India’s cybersecurity unit after spotting multiple high-risk vulnerabilities in Qualcomm and MediaTek chipset present in Android phones.

    How this vulnerability arrived in Android devices?

    ~Due to the critical security flaws in the Framework, System, Kernel, Arm component, Imagination Technologies, MediaTek components, Qualcomm components and Qualcomm closed-source components, this high-risk vulnerability got chance to exist in Android.

    Which Android versions are affected by these latest multiple vulnerabilities?

    ~As mentioned by CERT-In, the software that are affected by these vulnerabilities are- Android versions 12, 12L, 13 and 14 software.

    What are the severities of this high-risk vulnerability?

    ~By exploiting the spotted vulnerabilities, the attackers will obtain sensitive information of users. There will a risk of privilege escalation where attackers, without requiring additional execution, will gain access privileges. This can really be a high-risk assuming that typical security measures are disabled.

    How to protect Android Smartphones?

    ~Several precautionary steps should be taken by users to protect their smartphones from such identified vulnerability. Below are the steps to be followed:

    1. Updating Android Device to Newer Version –Many issues exploitation become difficult by enhancing the newer version of Android, as stated by ‘Android security platform and Google Play Protect’. By updating smartphones to newer version, users can protect their device.
    2. Enabling Automatic updates in device – Users are encouraged to keep device’s software up to date by enabling automatic updates for both OS and apps.
    3. Factory Reset – If you suspect any unwanted feature or risk in your device, just perform factory reset which will help you to erase all data including malware from your device. Make sure to have backup of your data.
    4. Authentic sources – Try to download apps only from trusted sources like Google Play store. Protect your device by avoiding downloading apps from unknown third-source.
